A casual and aesthetically pleasing bar is newer to the South East portland area. Lulu sits on SE Grand next to Dig A Pony. It has a sleek design, fun and fruity drinks, and a small Mexican-inspired menu. It is the perfect happy hour or late night casual destination.
When you walk into Lulu you are met with a bright and open space with a large and striking wall of bottles of liquor. The restaurant and bar are covered in small plants and greenery that go well with the simple design of the bar. There is table seating, bar seating, and a section of plush chairs and a couch. The back of the bar holds a small dance floor where a DJ plays slow jams and R&B on the weekends.
The specialty cocktails are inexpensive and have a fruity twist with fun names. The Pretty Ugly has kiwi and celery bitters, the Fake News has strawberry and agave, and the Swipe Right has raspberry and egg white. The presentation of the drinks is different and exciting. The Lulu Mule made with vodka, cucumber, lime, simple syrup, and ginger beer, is not served in the typical copper Moscow Mule mug. Instead, it is served in a clear glass cup. The bartenders are friendly and attentive and have no problem making accommodations to drinks.
While the food menu isn’t large, the food that Lulu has is full of flavor and is of high quality. Start with chips and guac and choose one of the Mexican-inspired plates. From burrito bowls made with seasonal veggies or carnitas to crunch wraps with local grass-fed beef and a Cheetos Torta made with crushed Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Finish your meal with El Flan with caramel coffee sauce.
Lulu has a great happy hour every day from 4-6. You can enjoy $1 off cocktails and drafts, $5 glasses of rose, and even a $7 Lulu Mule. There are discounted food items available during happy hour as well. Their happy hour menu makes Lulu a great place to start your night before heading to one of the many other bars in the area. Or just grab a drink and explore the up and coming shops along the blocks of SE Grand.
